Description
This is a token dedicated to John Howard, a prison reformer in Great Britain who died in 1790, I recoveredthis token
scuba diving in a river at a colonial era pier. I have tried for several years to find information on it and not had much luck other than a copyrighted image of it on the web that is credited to the British Museum. Photo #3 is the image from the web. I contacted the Museum and the only information they offered was that it was a token and it was to honor John Howard.
It is about the size and weight of a U. S. have dollar and it has a hole in it that indicates it was carried on a string at one time as a coin. I took it to a coin dealer to check for silver content and they did not want to test it because it would require rubbing material off the coin to test it. The coin dealer is the one that measured and weighed it
comparing
it to an older half dollar. The dealer did a comparison test where he dropped it on the glass counter along with the half dollar and they did not sound the same.
This is a very rare token and it may be the only one of its kind. The name of John Howard on the token is spelled "IOHN HOWARD" I do not know if it is misspelled or that was the way he spelled his name.
