Description
Scallops are gregarious in nature, and some free-swimming species are capable of short-range migrations. Scallops are renowned for their ability to swim. The opening and sudden snapping shut of the valves creates strong jets of water that propel the scallop. By varying the position of escaping water by means of the muscular mantle edge, the scallop may swim in any direction. When swimming normally, the scallop claps its valves as thought it were taking a series of bites out of the water. Water escaping behind at either side of the hinge pushes the scallop forward. The swimming ability prevents burial in muddy bottoms and often enables the scallop to escape predatory starfish and fish. All scallops possess well-developed eyes set along the edge of the fleshy mantle. Some species may have up to 100 jewel-like eyes, each of which has a lens, retina, and optic nerve. Scallops respond instantly to changes in light intensity or nearby moving objects. Small tentacles along the edge of the mantle are extremely sensitive to odors and changes in water pressure and serve as an advance guard against potential enemies. The fabulous color is unaltered by man! That is Mother Nature’s natural color for them! The pecten measures approximately 3.25” across including the barnacles. Buyer to pay .50 s/h. Thanks so much for looking!
