Sicily Lilybaion AR tetradrachm circa 330-305 BC XF [16.81 grams, 26 mm]
City was founded by the Carthaginians in 397 BC and populated by refugees from Motya which was destructed by Syracusan tyrant Dionysius I. The Greeks called the city Lilybaion, while the Carthaginians referred to it as Ras Melqart (Cape of Melqart). Melqart was a major deity in the Punic pantheon. A second Punic mint was established there producing coins closely modeled on the issues of Syracuse (charging quadriga and a female head surrounded by leaping dolphins). Coinage ended in about 305 BC and the city was captured by the Romans in 241 BC.
